Modern and popular measures to combat the Colorado potato beetle

Every summer resident knows that the invasion of the Colorado potato beetle is a serious problem, which is quite difficult to get rid of. This small insect multiplies rapidly and is voracious, and therefore is capable of causing huge damage to plantings in a short period of time. But if timely measures are taken to combat the Colorado potato beetle, then you can save the entire crop and dig up large, healthy, and, most importantly, whole potatoes in the fall.

Colorado beetle

What threatens the invasion of striped parasites?

When asked what the Colorado potato beetle loves, everyone will answer - potatoes! Moreover, he is ready to eat this vegetable at any stage of its development. In the spring, the parasite feasts on young entrances and lush green foliage, in the summer it moves to blossoming flowers, and closer to autumn it falls lower and lower - at first it is satisfied with the lower leaves and finally gets to the white pulp of tubers. The Colorado potato beetle destroys the plant gradually, leaving it no chance for normal development. And since the pest multiplies quite actively, in the near future the vulture “companions” appear in the adult beetle - larvae, which are really insatiable in comparison with the first ones. But the destruction of the potato plantations does not end the harm from the Colorado potato beetle. These insects are able to attack the beds with tomatoes and eggplant, eat sweet pepper and shoots of tobacco. Thus, it becomes clear that if measures to destroy the parasite are not taken in time, the garden will be in serious danger.

On a note! The Colorado potato beetle is a long-liver, which, unlike most insects, is able to survive not one year, but three. At the same time, he can winter without food and, after several hungry seasons, “delight” everyone around with completely healthy offspring! And the Colorado potato beetle hibernates deep in the soil, and therefore no chemical treatment at this moment is not afraid of him!

Landing Protection

How to get rid of the Colorado potato beetle? In this matter are able to help:

  • biological agents;
  • chemical poisons;
  • folk recipes;
  • natural enemies of the colorado potato beetle.

And now about each in more detail ...

Biological products

Biological preparations for protection against the Colorado potato beetle are good because they are absolutely safe for all warm-blooded and are not able to harm nature. As a result, the agronomist receives an environmentally friendly product, after cultivation of which the air and soil remain as clean. Among biological agents, it is worth highlighting the following:

  • "Bitoxibacillin";
  • Fitoverm;
  • Agravertin.

When working with such tools, you must remember the following rules:

  • from the concentrate, a working solution should be prepared according to the instructions;
  • the treatment is carried out 2-3 times, since despite the high efficiency against adult individuals and larvae, such preparations do not destroy eggs;
  • the culture is sprayed in calm dry weather in the afternoon, so that the dew has time to dry, while the air temperature should not be less than + 18 ° C.

Chemical poisons

Considering ways to deal with the Colorado potato beetle, it is impossible to ignore chemical poisons.Such substances, as a rule, are toxic to humans and animals, and therefore, when used, they should be worn to protect the skin of the hands, mucous membranes and respiratory organs and work clearly according to instructions.

Important! It is strictly forbidden to allow the use of pesticides, to which a clear instruction is not attached. At the same time, it should contain information about the exact dosage of the drug, the rules for its use, as well as precautions and recommendations for eliminating poisoning caused by this tool!

Among insecticides, the attention of agronomists deserved:

  • "Aktara";
  • Confidor
  • "Bankol";
  • "Regent";
  • Mospilan;
  • "Sonnet";
  • Corado.

Chemical poisons from the Colorado potato beetle are used as follows:

  • prepare the working solution according to the instructions, not exceeding the indicated dosage. If this condition is violated, harmful substances will accumulate in the tubers and soil;
  • the processing of beds is carried out using a balloon sprayer;
  • plantings are sprayed on a cool morning or evening;
  • in order to avoid resistance in the Colorado potato beetle, the insecticide must be alternated with chemicals of a different class.

Important! Chemical insecticides cannot be used on a hot day, as there is a high probability of poisoning by hazardous fumes!

Folk recipes

Can be used folk remedies for colorado potato beetle. Such drugs are practically safe for humans, affordable and quick to prepare. Let's consider some of them:

  • An effective solution is prepared on the basis of birch tar - 100 g of tar must be mixed in 10 l of water, after which the plantings are sprayed;
  • ash also shows high efficiency, two glasses of which should be boiled in a liter of water for a quarter of an hour, left for two days, after which 45 g of laundry soap are added to the solution, used for spraying;
  • vegetable decoctions and infusions will help fight the Colorado potato beetle; they can be prepared on the basis of onion husks, elecampane, horsetail, celandine, dandelion and wormwood - about 200 g per bucket of water.

Plant broths treatment is carried out in the morning or in the evening once every seven days. Three weeks before harvesting, spraying is stopped.

Natural enemies

On the territory of Russia there is a fairly large number of enemies of the Colorado potato beetle, which eat eggs, larvae and striped parasites themselves. These include lacewings and ladybugs. The Colorado potato beetle is also loved by some poultry, among them:

  • guinea fowl;
  • gray partridges;
  • pheasants;
  • turkeys.

However, these birds will not peck a gourmet potato on their own, they must be accustomed to this “delicacy” from childhood. For this, crushed insects are mixed into the feed. In the future, the bird gets used to the taste and searches for the favorite "delicacy" on the beds.

Important! When purchasing poultry to destroy the striped leaf beetle, you must forget about chemicals and other poisons! Otherwise, the health of your assistants will be seriously undermined!
