An interesting question: where do the midges come from?

But the answer to this question lies on the surface. And if you just think a little and turn on the imagination, it will immediately become clear where the midges come from. But we will not begin to look for simple ways, but we will approach the issue responsibly, revealing along the way all the secrets of the enemy insect invasion. To begin with, let us remind our readers the picture of what is happening in the apartment in case of infection.

Fruit midges

Portrait of the enemy

For a detailed examination of the enemy fruits and vegetables in the apartment, you need to provide a full portrait of the enemy, starting with who he is and how he behaves.

Who is this enemy?

To begin with, we’ll figure out who is the same midge that strives to spoil our fruits and vegetables. It turns out this is the famous Drosophila fly, which was the first of the insects to go into space.

Reference! Drosophila visited space not of her own free will. Our astronauts set experiments on it.

It is also called a fruit or wine fly because it appears on beginners to spoil or ferment fruit or vegetables.

When does he appear?

Pups usually appear at the moment when vegetables or fruits begin to deteriorate, when the process of decay of plant tissue begins. Then the dangerous enemy crawls out of all the cracks and begins to settle on a spoiled product.

Where does he come from?

In droves, Drosophila multiply in such places:

  • in the kitchens among plant debris in garbage bins;
  • in bathrooms on forgotten wet rags or just on a dirty floor;
  • in the habitats of domestic animals with non-compliance with their hygiene;
  • in flower pots with excessive watering, causing rotting of plant debris;
  • from ventilation, if there is a violation of sanitary standards in neighboring apartments or the basement.

How does he appear?

But there are such cases when the house has an absolute order in terms of sanitation, but still midges on your favorite orange appeared. As Drosophila found out that in our house the fruits began to deteriorate, who told her about it?

It turns out that everything becomes clear if we consider the process of propagation of a wine fly. The fact is that after mating, Drosophila lays eggs on the surface of fruits or vegetables. And then nature starts the waiting mechanism.

Suppose we bought in a store or brought good fresh and strong fruits from the garden. But the eggs of the wine fly are so small that we simply do not see them with the naked eye. And now our apple lies on the table until it starts to deteriorate. This triggers the mechanism of further reproduction of the insect. The egg begins to develop under the influence of putrefactive processes, and soon on the apple you will notice these same midges.

And after them, the rotting fruit and other individuals will arrive in time.

Prevention

Based on all that we said earlier, the conclusion suggests itself that the best remedy for fruit midges is undoubtedly prevention. It is always easier to prevent an attack than to subsequently fight it heroically.

So, we denote preventive measures that do not allow a wine fly to appear in our apartment:

  • maintaining sanitation in the apartment;
  • preventing the entry of midges from the outside;
  • thorough washing of purchased fruits and vegetables;
  • fruit storage in the refrigerator;
  • soil treatment in flower pots with a weak solution of potassium permanganate;
  • regular removal of garbage from the apartment.

Attention! Rinse the purchased vegetables and fruits with boiling water, it kills Drosophila eggs. The same advice applies to harvested fruits, berries and vegetables brought from the forest or your favorite summer residence. If it is not possible to quickly process products, put them in the refrigerator or pour hot water over them. At room temperature, store only those that can lie for a long time and not deteriorate.

Fighting the Enemy

If, nevertheless, the enemy appears, then you need to think about how to get rid of fruit midges in the apartment. To begin with, you should throw out all the garbage on which Drosophila can multiply, and then thoroughly clean the premises with detergents.

If it is possible to leave the apartment, then the best way to get rid of fruit midges in the kitchen and throughout the house is to use special aerosols such as "Dichlorvos" or "Raptor".

Attention! After using highly toxic products, be sure to thoroughly ventilate the rooms!

If midges appeared in the apartment, and there is no way to leave somewhere, then use some kind of trap for fruit flies. It can be either a store Velcro or a variety of homemade products that have long been in honor with our fellow citizens.

Sweet adhesive tape can be easily made at home by spreading a strip of paper with honey or sugar syrup with rosin and glycerin.

You can use, for example, such a simple device:

  1. Take a wide-necked bottle or a narrow can.
  2. Pour in sweet fruit juice or compote.
  3. Insert a funnel made of thick paper into the throat and securely fasten it there with tape or tape.

The principle of operation of this trap is simple: midges attracted by a delicious sweet smell easily penetrate into the cans through the funnel, but they no longer manage to get out.

At the end of the article we will give a link to a video plot telling about the struggle against these unpleasant fruit flies.

  • And for me, midges and midges. I have seen them since childhood. I am 35 and did not notice any harm from them, absolutely!
