How do cockroaches live and breed?

To understand how to deal with impudent invaders, you need to thoroughly understand the features of their life cycle. Learn how cockroaches breed what are they afraid of and how they look at different stages of their development.

Breeding cockroaches

Features of the life of cockroaches

All representatives of the cockroach order belong to insects with an incomplete transformation cycle. This means that the pupal stage is absent in the chain of their development. Let us consider in more detail what this means and how else they differ from other insects.

Life cycle

The entire life cycle of cockroaches can be divided into three periods:

  • egg
  • larva
  • adult insect.

Cockroach eggs are almost always enclosed in a special leathery pouch - the ooteca, where the kids are reliably protected from the external environment. A poisonous substance is incapable of penetrating through such a membrane, water will not flood the solid cradle, it is not afraid of the danger of being accidentally crushed.
In such a capsule, the larvae develop safely within a few weeks, in order to then come out into the light fully adapted to life in the external environment. Some representatives of the cockroach order produce live cubs, but this is more likely an exception to the rule.

What do small cockroaches look like? Consider this issue thoroughly, as they are often unknowingly confused with other insects. For example, with home bugs.

So, the larvae of cockroaches - nymphs - practically do not differ from adult individuals, except that they are more modest in size and usually have no wings.

In some species at different stages of development, insects have a different color. The larvae are mostly painted in a darker, saturated color. The coloring of adults is usually lighter. Nymphs feed on the same feeds as adults, live with them, lead the same way of life.

Adult insects are equipped with genitals and very often have wings, although with rare exceptions they practically do not use them. Many cockroaches in the adult stage are equipped with glands capable of producing odorous substances. With the help of them, insects seek a sexual partner or scare away enemies. Very often, such a feature becomes the cause of household allergies in people who are forced to share housing with cockroaches.

Interesting fact! In folk medicine, dried carcasses of carcasses were often used before. From dropsy they used tea infused with these insects. A dish of roasted with garlic mustachioed tenants was taken for indigestion.

Development features

The life expectancy of cockroaches ranges from 4 months. up to 4 years. About half of this time, insects spend in the adult stage. Sometimes even a large part of it, as the larvae grow rapidly. Cockroaches in the nymph stage can last from 1.5 months. up to several years. During this time, they manage to molt several times, increasing in size after each skin discarded. As a rule, this procedure is repeated 5 to 9 times over the entire development period.

Having reached maturity, nymphs turn into an adult insect, with its inherent behavioral characteristics. Sometimes the growing up period is delayed for an indefinite time. As a rule, this happens due to adverse external conditions. For example, such as:

  • low ambient temperature;
  • poor nutrition;
  • exposure to toxic chemicals.

Larvae can slow down their development even in the egg if the air temperature is below room temperature. This feature helps youngsters survive a difficult period under the protection of a dense capsule - ooteki. Under favorable conditions, small cockroaches hatch within 2-3 weeks after masonry. They wait for a while until their soft infant cover acquires the strength of chitin, and then scatter in different directions, getting used to a life full of anxieties and dangers.

Advice! In order to get rid of insects, it is enough to maintain the temperature in the room below zero. At -50With they die within half an hour. Ambient temperature below -70With ruins cockroaches in one minute.

Propagation Features

So, how does the process of reproduction take place? How do cockroaches breed? Let's look at this issue in more detail.

Having reached the age when mating is possible, females attract males by odorous substances secreted from special glands located, as a rule, in the back of their body. The males, responding to the call, fertilize the female with the help of the genital plate located at the end of the abdomen between the cerci - the articulated processes that are present in all representatives of this detachment. Some species take care of females for a long time before coping with them.

After fertilization, the partners break up. Males go in search of food or new ladies of their heart, and females after a while lay their eggs in a durable sac formed for this purpose - the ooteca. Clutch can contain from 15 to 60 eggs, depending on the species. And for the whole time of their life, females postpone from 20 (female prusaka), up to 90 (in an American cockroach) ootec.

Females wear a capsule with eggs for some time in their body - a day or several weeks, dragging an end protruding beyond the abdomen. Then she leaves her in a safe, dark place and leaves. After a short time, small cockroaches hatch from the eggs.

Sometimes the breeding of cockroaches is of the asexual type, when the eggs of the female develop without the participation of the male. This method is called parthenogenesis. Able to multiply in this way american cockroaches. These insects have one more peculiarity - care for the offspring in the first days after hatching of the larvae.

An interesting fact is that for successful breeding, a female cockroach is enough to meet the male only once in her life. Subsequently, the eggs are fertilized with seed material that has been preserved in special sections of her body. This feature is another factor contributing to the spread of these insects, because only one fertilized female is enough to establish a colony.

Interesting fact! In the old days in Russia it was believed that cockroaches bring prosperity to the house. Moving to a new place of residence, they were taken with them “for good luck”. This factor contributed a lot to the resettlement of insects throughout the territory of modern Russia.

How to prevent the reproduction of insects in a city apartment?

How cockroaches breed, we found out, is it possible to somehow prevent this process in order to naturally reduce the insect population?

Unfortunately, at present, there are no ways to control the reproduction of representatives of this insect order. At one time, however, drugs promising to sterilize female cockroaches by means of some volatile substances were sold. However, they did not receive wide distribution, possibly due to their low efficiency. Therefore, there is only one radical way to get rid of uninvited guests - their complete destruction with the use of chemicals.

At pest control we must not forget that the water can withstand the effects of most chemicals. To destroy the young hatched from eggs, re-processing of the room is applied, 2-3 weeks after the first pest control.

  • In the apartment (living room), cockroaches are not found, but sometimes they wander from the neighbors, obviously by ventilation, because I often meet lonely adventurers in the combined bathroom. I left town for a month, and when I returned, it turned out that I had forgotten open canned fish in the refrigerator, which, naturally, was rotten. I had to defrost and wash the refrigerator. The smell of fresh rotten meat and other phenomena was so attractive that already at night I noticed some movement in the kitchen corner from the corner of my eye. It was decided to make sure that these are not glitches. I turned on the light and put aside the bag of salt. The mustachioed intruder was found and identified as a cockroach. Like a ninja, I was armed with a slipper from the hallway in two jumps back and forth. Soon the illegal immigrant was put to death by putting pressure on him incompatible with life. Domestic shoes were put back in the armory. But something made me return to the kitchen area ... Reaching for a can to remove it from a countertop onto a shelf, I saw a small asshole. I have not seen such little cockroaches. Since there was nothing better at hand than a tablecloth, she went into business. Shmyak. And we have a corpse instead of a living being. "Hm strange. Has he also crawled from afar. He looks like he’s just hatched ... Wait a minute! ”I threw aside a couple of cans, mugs and bags. And here it is: on the edge of the countertop lay a small holey capsule, that same ooteka, and around it a couple of dozen little mustached invaders. And let them all be born in my kitchen, but they can’t see citizenship! I quickly took advantage of the dining rag that was still in my hands. Damn it, at that moment I felt like a star-landing marine, fighting hordes of terrible arachnids! Togo crushed, and that, and one more! Where have you crawled? You're lying, you won’t leave! When no one was left alive except me, for a couple of minutes, I was wary of inspecting the countertop. Hmm, it was an unequal battle. But I bet that even one petty bastard managed to escape and is now hiding among my shelves and cabinets, preparing to start his terror. Well, we'll meet again, and believe me, I'm going to be fully armed.

  • these creatures crawl after 12 nights, if I notice an uninvited guest, I remove everything from the table, put in the middle a fragrant piece of dried squid or something else, but fragrant, turn off the light in the kitchen and turn on the light in the hallway so that it’s twilight and 20 minutes when you are already tired of waiting and want to sleep (critters know the time) an uninvited guest crawls out of the shelter and here is his clap!

  • Probably. I will not say anything new when I talk about my cockroach wars, which always ended in victory for this infamy ...

We had a repair in the apartment, well, and something remained after this repair.

Including and (I do not know what is called), thick silver tape.

I wanted to throw this tape away. Yes, I saw five adult adults adhering to him outrageous.

    Enough is clever!

I put the whole kitchen, bath, toilet and a little bit in the room - as long as I could - pieces of 20-30 centimeters of this saving tape.

I put in the middle of this piece of scotch tape a bread and in the morning I dance in a victorious dance.

I share with you guys - be you and the winners in the cockroach war.

The main thing is cheap. And - angrily!

In the USA, these same American tacaracans, described above, live. I live on the top floor of an old four-story building. These creepy creatures seem to live on the roof, sometimes creeping towards me through the windows.

Imagine a Prusak, only three times as many. Also flying. True, they rarely fly and over small distances, but it looks very intimidating.

Once a whole detachment came to me, about five. It was a stuffy summer evening. I forgot to close the window and came home at night. In the summer, these cockroaches seem to begin to especially actively get warm, and on hot summer evenings they massively get out of their shelters (large cockroaches can sometimes be seen in parks or garbage cans). I fought with this detachment for several hours. He pounded everyone.

But the battle was, to put it mildly, nervous. Particularly impressive is that when you attack an American cockroach, it often flies directly at you in response. They say that in a panic they don’t realize what they are doing. In addition, they have eyes on the head from above, so they do not see what is in front of them, only up.

In general, I do not wish anyone to encounter American cockroaches.

  • There were sticky traps at my place and a pregnant female stuck there, and of course, the egg was laid there and these nasty little cockroaches were at first almost transparent, but from time to time I kept an eye on them to make sure no one escaped, and so they were like this for about an hour and only then darkened, the article did not write about it, and because of this it seems that the information is not complete and there is something else that would be interesting to know

  • For my 38 years of life, I only saw these creatures on TV, in the film "People in Black", remember, a gibber-alien ?! So, we are renting a room with my husband, the mistress of us strictly demanded to be clean, but about the cockroaches that live here as permanent residents, I see, I forgot to warn them by girlish memory.

So, here my acquaintance with these creatures took place, one would think that my life would not be complete, bypassing this acquaintance, because there is no such thing as without it.

So, comrades, I’m murmuring, they are probably killed only by boric acid. You need to boil eggs, about three, hard boiled. Separate the yolk, turn it into a puree with a fork, pour in boric acid, which is an alcohol solution, so as not to make a liquid puree, build peas and scatter along their favorite paths. They simply die for the joy of you, lose their vigilance, begin to come across to you in the afternoon, and the females come across. Become slow. What is not peculiar to these Prussians. For three months I have turned from an innocent inhabitant of the earth, turned into an armed killer of cockroaches.
