Effective methods to get rid of wasp on raspberries and save berries from insects - "sweet tooth"

Information on how to get rid of wasps on raspberries is relevant for every gardener. The activity of black-and-yellow insects occurs in the middle of summer and coincides with the ripening period of the berries.

Wasps love raspberries

Harm caused by raspberry wasps

Although wasps are omnivorous, the basis of their diet is plant foods that are rich in sugars and have a pleasant smell. Therefore, raspberries are extremely attractive to them. It does gardening a lot of damage:

  1. Although the insect does not harm the plant itself, it bites the flesh of its fruits, which reduces the quality of the crop.
  2. The wasp eats not only fresh berries, but also decayed fruits and fruits. If an individual first eats an old fruit, and then begins to gnaw young raspberries, it can introduce pathogenic microorganisms into the berry, primarily mold and cause infection.
  3. In the pulp of raspberries, damaged by the jaws of wasps, fermentation processes begin, which gives an unpleasant taste.

If the gardener noticed: wasps eat raspberries, what to do in such a situation? Chemical and folk methods of struggle will help.

Fighting Wasps Arriving on Raspberries

The control of insect pests that gnaw at the fruit is complicated by the fact that it is very dangerous to use chemical insecticides. Poisoning substances, although they disappear on average two weeks after spraying, are still able to accumulate in the pulp of berries. As a result, the person who ate them may feel unpleasant symptoms of poisoning. Another option - processing raspberry brushes with strongly smelling compounds (for example, infusion of onions and garlic) is also effective and has a right to exist, but there is a risk that the unpleasant smell will be transmitted to the crop.

Scaring away wasps from raspberry plantings, it is important to take care of the taste of the crop and its safety for health.

If wasps settled on the site, having built a nest, then the protection of raspberries should begin with its destruction. Otherwise, insects will appear again and again, and the result of the efforts will be almost imperceptible.

Passive fighting methods

Wasps have their own characteristics that can be used in the fight against them. Taking care in advance to create uncomfortable conditions for insects, you can avoid their attacks on raspberries. For example:

  1. Wasps live a large family - a swarm. Each of them builds a hive, trying not to occupy someone else's territory. Therefore, next to raspberries, you can hang a homemade model of the nest, which is simply made independently from gray fabric and filler - cotton wool or ordinary plastic bags. Artificial nests are also sold in specialized stores.
  2. Installation near the landing of wind structures, repelling moles and bears, as well as a scarecrow, may not be liked by wasps.
  3. At the time of harvest ripening, the shrub is covered with gauze, a mosquito net or agrofibre, transmitting sunlight. To reduce material consumption, clusters of berries are wrapped individually.
  4. The smell of some plants is repulsive to wasps. Especially they do not tolerate the essential oils that make up coniferous trees. Therefore, next to raspberries, you can plant a pine or spruce.Herbaceous plants that scare away insects include bitter wormwood, basil, pelargonium, mint and lemon balm. All of them will find a place on the site as decorative species or used in cooking.

Folk repellents

One of the popular ways to scare away wasps from raspberries is to periodically fumigate with smoke. To do this, make a fire nearby or put a barbecue, in which they throw firewood from coniferous trees.

You can try using "Liquid Smoke", although, according to gardeners, it brings less results than "live fire".

You can also scare away insects from berries with the help of laundry soap and pods of red yellow pepper. They are laid out not far from raspberries or hung on branches. To do this, make a hole in the bar of soap.

Nest destruction

But all methods will be ineffective or will bring a short-term effect if wasps have built their nest on a site or near neighbors. Therefore, you need to start with the destruction of the hive. It can be located on tree branches, in outbuildings, in the attic and under roofs. Earth wasps build a nest in the ground, and it is found through a circular hole in the soil.

After processing, when stirring stops in the nest, it is removed with a package.

The easiest way to do this is to use chemical insecticides in the form of an aerosol. They are sold in hardware stores. Since the active substances are supplied under high pressure, there is no need to come close to the object. For example, you can choose a Moskitol company “From hornet’s nests”, spraying the jet at a distance of 6 m, or “Dichlofos NEO”, operating at a distance of 1 m. The hive of earth wasps is filled with insecticidal solutions (for example, boric acid).

Trap

Simple traps will help you catch up to 100 individuals per day. You can buy them in a store or make them yourself from an ordinary plastic bottle:

  1. Cut off the neck and remove the cap from it.
  2. At the base of the bottle, make small holes for the spread of smell and two for threading a cord or wire to hang the structure.
  3. Pour the bait (fermented compote, diluted jam or honey, syrup, beer).
  4. Place the neck with the hole down in the cut bottle.
  5. Hang near raspberries.

Such a trap should be regularly cleaned or changed. To insects quickly die, it is recommended to add a solution of boric acid powder or a special bait "Adamant".

If raspberries are properly protected from wasps, then most berries will ripen without damage and no damage will be done to the amount of the crop. Therefore, you need to take measures, starting with a site inspection, search and destruction when a nest is discovered. Traps will help catch flying insects, and passive methods of struggle and folk remedies will scare them away.
