How to get rid of Drosophila: homemade traps and aerosols

Drosophila are familiar to almost every housewife. These small flies appear as if from nowhere and at the same time are pretty annoying. They curl over products, penetrate packages and cans with stocks. And today we will tell you about how to get rid of Drosophila on our own quickly and at minimal cost.

Drosophila

Characteristic

Drosophila is a fruit fly, which is a representative of the genus of small insects from the family of fruit flies. In total, there are about 1.5 thousand of the described species, and most of them are synanthropic, that is, their lifestyle is closely connected with the person and his dwelling. In houses and apartments there are the most favorable conditions for the normal life of Drosophila, in particular, an inexhaustible source of food. In nature, these insects feed mainly on plant juices and rotting organics. And the diet of their larvae consists of microorganisms.
In our apartments, the most common Drosophila is a small fly, with red eyes and a yellow-brown body color. Females are larger than males — about 2.5 mm, and in the latter, the tip of the abdomen is colored black. Females on this part of the body have dark transverse stripes.

Females lay eggs in rotting fruits, of which, after 24 hours, larvae appear. Those, in turn, after 5 days turn into pupae and, after another 5 days, adults emerge from the pupae - adults.

The Drosophila fly does not live for long - about 2 months, but since reproduction is quite rapid, in a short period of time they are able to populate almost the entire apartment.

Drosophila in the apartment

Drosophila have wings, but they fly quite poorly. The maximum distance this fly is able to cover is about 180 m. Therefore, they cannot fly from far away. So where do Drosophila come from? Initially, they live in nature, usually in orchards with fruit trees.

In addition, if you take land from the street to plant indoor plants, you run the risk of bringing larvae of these insects to the house, which will hatch already in the apartment.

Sometimes Drosophila fly into apartments through windows and ventilation ducts. Before that, they can swarm in a dump near the house and in the trees. At the same time, these flies populate not only the kitchen. They will like your indoor flowers, in the pallets of which stagnant and acidified water, as well as containers with food for pets, where Drosophila can not only eat, but also successfully reproduce.

These flies are not capable of harming a person. They do not bite and are not carriers of diseases. But at the same time, these insects with their annoying flickering deliver a certain discomfort.

Methods of struggle

With the advent of Drosophila, it is advisable not to leave fruits and berries on the tables, especially in the heat, since insects immediately attack them and begin to lay their eggs.

On a note! After eating contaminated foods, there is a chance of an upset bowel!

Look through all the cabinets and kitchen cabinets, it is possible that a long-forgotten apple or banana was lying somewhere. But the most frequent place of Drosophila accumulation is a garbage bin in which the remains of berries and fruits continue to deteriorate safely. It is this concentration of organic debris that is most attractive to these insects, since there is not only an abundance of food, but also heat.

And before you get rid of Drosophila in the apartment, you should:

  • find rotting food and take it out of the house immediately;
  • thoroughly clean the place where the bin is;
  • thoroughly wash all bedside tables and cabinets in which you usually store vegetables and fruits, as there may be eggs and insect larvae;
  • daily change the water in the bowls of your pets and try to feed them so that food does not lie in the saucers;
  • inspect pots with domestic plants, and if Drosophila are found in them, change the ground and wash the pallets;
  • set traps and place them in each room;
  • with a large accumulation of insects, use household insecticides.

Recommendation! Get fresh soil for plants exclusively in garden stores!

Folk remedies

Let's start with folk recipes and traps for Drosophila, which you can do with your own hands.

Liquid traps. To prepare the product you need to combine sugar with “live” yeast and dilute it all in water. Pour the resulting solution into small containers or saucers and place them around the perimeter of the room. Flies will fly to the bait and sink in it. Do you still have time to change them for new ones.

Advice! Instead of the mixture described, you can use regular beer, sugar syrup, any sweet juice or water combined with honey!

Mechanical traps. To make such a trap, you need to take a plastic glass and place a small piece of apple, pear, banana or a handful of berries in it. Next, cover the neck with cling film and make a few small holes in it. Drosophila will flock to the bait, but, having reached it, they will not be able to exit. You can also use a paper cone instead of film.

Duct tape. Such traps are sold in stores and are used not only from flying, but also from crawling pests. They are laid out or hung in the kitchen and near flower pots. Insects stick and you throw a trap. A similar device can be made independently from double-sided tape. Small pieces of it are glued to cardboard and placed near a cluster of insects.

Trap with vinegar. This tool will work for about a week. To prepare it, you must mix table vinegar with dishwashing liquid. We pour the resulting composition into small containers and arrange in the room. Every seven days we change the solution to fresh until Drosophila disappears completely.

If you find larvae in flower pots, then getting rid of them will help potassium permanganate solution. They spill soil several times, after which they are treated with a special insecticide against pests that parasitize indoor plants.

Insecticides

Drosophila flies can also be removed using aerosols from flying insects. These include "Raptor", "Combat", "Dichlorvos" and others. Pre-hide or remove all food from the kitchen, open bedside tables and cabinets. Spray the product in places where insects have accumulated and leave the room. After a few hours, the treated room should be ventilated and walk with a damp sponge on all surfaces. It is advisable to repeat the treatment after 10 days in order to destroy the larvae and newly emerged adults.

Drosophila also can not stand the cold, and if the infection occurred in the winter, then the apartment should be adequately ventilated. Turn off the radiators, open all the windows and open the doors of the kitchen set. Insects will die from hypothermia, and you just have to sweep the fallen out of the apartment.

And remember about prevention, which will prevent the appearance and reproduction of flies:

  • the most effective is regular cleaning in all rooms;
  • do not leave fruits and berries on the tables - store them exclusively in the refrigerator;
  • Take out the bin, especially in the warmer months, daily;
  • clean the sink regularly and clean it.

Getting rid of Drosophila is quite easy, but even easier is to carry out prophylaxis. And remember that insecticides are best used only after the gentle means did not bring the expected results. Let your always clean from flies and other pests!
